Root of the Matter offers seasonal, land-based services designed to help BIPOC families and communities reclaim space, grow food, and care for the land with intention. Whether you're refreshing a garden bed or clearing brush for a new planting zone, our work is rooted in ancestral wisdom, sustainability, and cooperative care.

Seasonal Services

Prepare your space for growth or rest. We offer spring and fall cleanups to help your garden transition with the seasons.

Spring Cleanup (March–May): Leaf and debris removal, light pruning, bed edging, perennial prep, and optional mulch refresh.
Fall Cleanup (October–December): Leaf and branch removal, brush clearing, winter bed prep, and optional mulching or bagging.

Base rate: $300–$350+ for standard residential yards under ¼ acre. Larger properties or complex terrain will be priced based on square footage/acreage, vegetation density, slope, and disposal method. Additional fees may apply for equipment rental, hauling, or heavy debris removal.

Brush & Limb Clearing

We safely clear overgrown areas and small trees to help you reclaim usable space.

Light brush removal (hand clearing, small saplings): $300+
Heavy brush & tall weed clearing: $400–$600+
Tree limb trimming (up to 12 ft): $250 base + $75/hr after 2 hours
Small tree cutting (under 15 ft): $350+
Wood chipping & on-site mulch: $50–$200

We do not remove trees over 15 ft—referrals available.

Garden Bed & Planting

We install and refresh garden beds, plant annuals and perennials, and support container gardening.

Garden bed install or refresh: $150+ per bed
Raised bed assembly + soil: $200+ per bed
Planting (flowers, herbs, veggies): $5–$15 per plant
Shrub/small tree planting: $45–$75 per plant
Repotting container plants: $15–$25 per pot

Materials not included unless specified.

Mulching & Soil

We deliver and install mulch, compost, and topsoil to enrich your growing space.

Mulch install: $75 minimum + $50/yard
Topsoil/compost delivery + install: $85 minimum + material cost
Edging & bed shaping: $2.50–$4.50/linear foot

Lawn Maintenance & Edging

We offer limited lawn services for standard residential yards.

Lawn mowing: $55–$95 per cut
String trimming, edging, debris blowout: $125+
One-time mow & cleanup: $125+
Biweekly/monthly packages available by estimate

Additional Services

Fence line clearing: $250+
Pathway or garden border cleanup: $150+
Composting + soil amendment: $100+
Container garden install: $300+
Raised bed design + install + planting (package): $600–$1200+
